Clint Eastwood signed on for Il Magnifico Stragnero, as A Fistful of Dollars (1964) was originally called, and flew off to Rome carrying his Rawhide pistols and gun belt, a flat hat he picked up in a costume shop, some black jeans and several boxes of the nasty little cigars—they made him feel “cantankerous”—that would become his character’s trademark. ‘The Man With No Name’ was largely Clint Eastwood’s visionary creation.
